Bespoke Process

The process for creating a bespoke commission piece centres around the client. The client can have as much or as little input as they like, and get the final say on what goes into the new piece.

Enquiry - The Initial Discussion

It all begins with a conversation. Let me know what you’re after, maybe what hardwoods you like, maybe what existing furniture you have, anything you feel relevant and important for your potential new piece. Many clients like to send over images they have found of furniture they like and the space the new piece will be sitting in.

Some clients like to give a rough set of criteria and say “I want to see how you would design it, do your thing”. It’s completely up to you how involved you’d like to be in the process.

Modelling - The Drawing Board

The next stage involves me drawing the piece. This gives me a chance to consider aesthetics, strength, sizing and more. I will send the clients the drawings, usually with some voice notes or as a screen recorded video, and adjust it according to their preferences until we land on a final design.

There is no limit on number of iterations or a specific format for interaction, I will work to the requirements of each client/build individually.

The Build - Filmed

Once the client is happy with the design, I can start to craft the piece from rough lumber. This is a complicated process, so I update the client as I go, explaining only what is useful and interesting to them. This gives the client the invaluable experience of seeing their new piece being built. Updates will consist of photographs and even videos if necessary.

If tastes have changed, some design changes can still be made after the build has begun depending on the stage of the build. In this instance, I encourage the client to let me know as soon as possible, so we can discuss the best way to proceed (new drawings will be created if necessary).
